Walking exercise becoming sore?…we explore why, and how we can help…

With warmer weather and a sense of cabin fever from restricted travel, many of us are using our exercise allocation for a good old walk.

For some, a daily walk will be normal practice, but for others they may have seen an increase in the distances they are walking, changes in the frequency, or variable terrain.  These changes can develop the onset of muscle or tendon issues from unaccustomed loading, changes in our biomechanics and an increase in use, particularly if you have gone from a weekend walker to a daily mileage walker!

If your body hasn’t adapted well, or you haven’t gradually increased these factors, you might start to feel soreness and/or pain around the shins, arches of the feet, Achilles tendon, knees or hips.  You may start shortening your walks or stopping altogether due to pain.  It may be sore in the morning, perhaps ease a little, then become more uncomfortable through the day.

Stretching, anti-inflammatory medication, perhaps ice and an alternative activity can help rest the affected area, but if symptoms persist, our Specialist Physiotherapists can still help you with a TELEPHONE OR VIDEO CALL CONSULTATION enabling us to assess and see the area that bothers you.

We will look at what may need to be stretched or strengthened to allow you to resume your daily exercise and maintain fitness at this time.  Footwear is another consideration, do your shoes support you for the distance/terrain you are walking?  Sandals, trainers and walking boots will all do the job, but the condition of your shoes and the terrain may determine your choice of footwear.

With many people noticing the positive effects of daily exercise, you may consider keeping your walk a regular activity, and the correct advice and treatment will ensure you body has the tolerance in strength and endurance to withstand greater miles, time or changes in terrain.
